Curaçao and Proteus Ocean Group take step toward underwater station realization by 2027

Local | By Correspondent August 27, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Last Friday, Minister Charles Cooper met again with aquanaut and Proteus Ocean Group founder Fabien Cousteau to discuss further steps in the development of the PROTEUS™ underwater station near Curaçao. Both parties are collaborating to make the innovative project, expected to be operational by 2027, a reality off the coast of Curaçao.

During the meeting, the Curaçao government and Proteus Ocean Group emphasized the station's significance for marine research and the training of NASA astronauts.

Previously, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed, and now active efforts are underway to ensure an organized process for the construction and implementation of PROTEUS™.

A special working group, composed of representatives from various ministries and CINEX, regularly meets to coordinate the project’s progress and provide necessary support. The underwater station is expected to significantly contribute to both scientific research and Curaçao's international visibility, according to the parties involved.
