Curaçao and Netherlands Push Energy Transition as Jetten Visits Aqualectra Battery Park

Local, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent July 16, 2026

THE HAGUE – The transition toward renewable energy was one of the final themes of Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten’s visit to Curaçao, with a stop at Aqualectra’s Hofi Mooi battery storage facility highlighting the island’s plans for a more sustainable electricity system.

The battery park is designed to improve the stability of Curaçao’s electricity network and create more capacity for renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.

Aqualectra is working toward a future in which 70 percent of electricity generation comes from renewable sources. The Netherlands supports Curaçao’s energy transition through programs including the Sustainable Energy Production and Climate Transition scheme (SDE++).

During the visit, Jetten also unveiled an artwork at the Hofi Mooi battery park, marking the importance of cooperation in developing a more sustainable energy future for the island.

According to Jetten, energy security is closely connected to economic resilience and the ability of communities to deal with future challenges.

The Dutch prime minister’s visit also included discussions on cooperation within the Kingdom, social development and security. However, while renewable energy was presented as an area of shared ambition, several major financial and political issues between Curaçao and the Netherlands remain under discussion.

Among those are the continuation of the country package reforms and the future of Dutch loans provided to Curaçao.

Jetten ended his visit with a positive message about Curaçao’s future and even expressed support for the island’s national football team, the Blue Wave, during its historic World Cup participation. However, behind the positive tone of the visit remain important discussions about governance, financial independence, social challenges and the future relationship between Curaçao and the Netherlands.
