Local | By Press release August 22, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - On August 16, the Minister of Economic Development of Curaçao hosted the Minister of Economic Affairs, Communication, and Sustainable Development of Aruba, Geofrey Wever, for an important work visit aimed at fostering collaboration and exchanging vital economic information. Accompanying Minister Wever was Maria Dijkhof-Pita, Director of the Department of Economy of Aruba. This visit took place within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed last year by both ministers, aimed at strengthening the economic and commercial ties between the two islands.

During the meeting, the two ministers delved deeper into discussions and reached concrete agreements on key projects that could further the development of both countries. One of the most prominent topics on the agenda was the Fast Ferry project, a major initiative designed to enhance connectivity between Aruba and Curaçao. The ministers reiterated their commitment to the project and agreed to seek technical assistance from the Netherlands to ensure further progress. While work on the Fast Ferry project has been underway for several years, both parties emphasized the need for concrete action and included the project in the implementation agenda of the Country Package initiative.

The meeting also touched on cooperation between the Aruba Fair Trade Authority and Curaçao's Fair Trade Authority. Both organizations have signed an agreement to collaborate and exchange information, further strengthening their economic partnership.

In addition to these projects, a number of other topics were discussed between the delegations. It was agreed that a comprehensive work agenda would be developed and that regular virtual meetings would be held to ensure the smooth and successful implementation of the agreements reached.

The work visit was considered highly productive, conducted in a positive and cooperative atmosphere. It provided an excellent opportunity to consolidate cooperation and strengthen the economic and commercial ties between Aruba and Curaçao.
