Court orders cessation of cardboard storage in Sans Souci after complaints of nuisance

Local | By Correspondent May 3, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - A resident of Sans Souci must cease the storage and processing of cardboard following a court ruling. The Minister of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) had previously issued an order prohibiting the activities due to nuisance and the lack of a permit.

Despite previous warnings and a fire in 2021, which resulted in a large part of the cardboard depot burning down, the activities had continued.

The court ruled that the resident is acting in violation of the Nuisance Ordinance by operating without a permit. There is no prospect of legalization of the activities, and enforcement, according to the court, is not disproportionate.

The resident attempted to challenge the order, but the court rejected this request. A new order must now be issued clarifying when and how the government will intervene if the cardboard is not removed.
