Court Delays Substantive Ruling in DOEN Union Case

Local, | By Correspondent May 6, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The court in Curaçao has not yet issued a substantive ruling in the case brought by the DOEN, according to an interim judgment received on Monday.

The judge determined that further coordination is required before the case can proceed, as the union represents two distinct groups: civil servants employed by DOS and workers affiliated with special school boards.

Due to this division, the court indicated that different legal jurisdictions must be involved. Matters concerning civil servants will require the participation of an administrative (civil service) judge, while the civil court remains responsible for the case involving employees of special education institutions.

Because the case has implications for both groups, the judge emphasized the need to align proceedings across both legal tracks. A new hearing date will be scheduled to allow all parties to coordinate their availability and ensure a unified approach to the case.

Only after this process is completed will the court be able to move toward a final ruling.

The DOEN union has stated that it will consult with its legal counsel in the coming days to determine its next steps in the case.
