Council for Law Enforcement: Progress needed in Curaçao’s law enforcement development

Local | By Correspondent October 23, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Council for Law Enforcement (RvR) has emphasized that there is still significant progress to be made in the development of law enforcement in Curaçao. This is outlined in the report The State of Law Enforcement Curaçao 2023, which was recently presented to the Parliament.

In its concluding remarks, the RvR highlights that the challenges facing the country are diverse and extensive. The Council also notes a reluctance to actively seek out opportunities for improvement.

Certain projects, such as the construction of a detention facility for the Curaçao Police Force to hold detainees, have not been completed. This is particularly concerning given the longstanding lack of cell capacity, which has been a known issue for years.

The RvR also pointed out that the expansion plan for the Curaçao Juvenile Justice Facility (JJIC) has not yet been realized. As a result, the construction of temporary accommodations at the JJIC has been delayed, which is crucial for the implementation of the "placement in a juvenile facility" measure.

Additionally, the report addresses issues such as car theft, which still requires attention from law enforcement agencies. The Council also expressed concern over the significant increase in cases of violent crime.
