Cooperatives for sustainable development

Local | By Press release June 30, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - On the 1st of July, cooperatives around the world will celebrate International Cooperative Day (#CoopsDay) under the theme "Cooperatives for Sustainable Development." This year marks the 101st celebration of International Cooperative Day, and cooperatives in Curaçao will also join in the festivities. This annual celebration recognizes the significant contribution of cooperatives to the global economy and their role in building a much more sustainable future.

In the same spirit as the global celebrations of International Cooperative Day, the Minister of Economic Development, Mr. Ruisandro Cijntje, calls on all local cooperatives to unite with cooperatives around the world and demonstrate that in Curaçao too, cooperativism actively contributes to sustainable development. Here in Curaçao, the Minister of Economic Development is tasked with supporting the development and management of cooperatives in various sectors such as savings and credit, production (including agriculture, livestock, and fishing), services, and other forms of cooperativism.

International Cooperative Day is celebrated every year on the first Saturday of July by countries affiliated with the United Nations and the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA). This year's theme, "Cooperatives for Sustainable Development," highlights how cooperatives worldwide, inspired by the values and principles of cooperativism, incorporate the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their DNA.

Minister Cijntje and his entire ministry extend congratulations to all credit unions, fishing cooperatives, livestock cooperatives, agricultural cooperatives in Curaçao, and other production cooperatives. Congratulations are also extended to the two cooperative federations in Curaçao, namely FEKOSKAN and FKUP.
