WILLEMSTAD - Venezuela finds itself embroiled in controversy as news spreads that the offspring of undocumented Venezuelan migrants have been separated from their parents. The situation unfolded last week when a vessel carrying Venezuelan nationals was intercepted, and it was revealed that five children were among those aboard.
Curaçao Chronicle has recently published a press release from the Justice Department, shedding light on the matter. According to this statement, the children have been placed under the care of an institution in Curaçao, where their safety and well-being are ensured. However, reports from local media outlets in Venezuela indicate that parents are keen to be reunited with their children but are currently denied that opportunity.
Despite the parents being present on the island, the Immigration Service of Curaçao argues that the lack of birth certificates for the children makes such reunions impossible. On the contrary, a Venezuelan journalist contradicts this assertion, claiming that Venezuelan authorities did indeed provide the necessary documentation.
The duration of the separation and when parents will be able to see their children again remain uncertain, adding to the complexity of this already contentious issue.
