WILLEMSTAD – Supermarkets in Curaçao apply different prices, even for products regulated by the government. This was revealed in a study conducted by the Consumer Association. The association is bringing this to the attention of the Inspection Department of the Ministry of Economic Development.
During a price comparison carried out from October 14 to 20, the Fundashon pa Konsumidó examined 135 different products at 21 supermarkets and convenience stores.
The comparison showed that the prices of some basic products vary significantly, despite government regulation on many these items.
As an example, the association mentions the prices of Goldmedal flour. It costs 15.51 guilders at Carrefour and 8.55 guilders at Best Buy, a difference of 6.96 guilders. Another example is Casa Italiana macaroni. It costs 4.37 guilders at Esperamos but 7.93 guilders at Bon Bini, a difference of 3.56 guilders.
Cheapest
Mangusa Hyper Market, Mangusa Rio, and Centrum Mahaai are the cheapest supermarkets with the best selection.
Mangusa Hyper Market was the cheapest for 39 products, Mangusa Rio for 38 products, and Centrum Mahaai for 24 products. The best-stocked supermarkets were Mangusa Rio with 114 products, Mangusa Hypermarket with 111 products, and Centrum Mahaai with 105 products.
