Consumer Association calls on retailers and restaurant owners to consider diabetes patients

Local | By Correspondent March 4, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Retailers and restaurant owners should adjust their offerings and be more considerate of the needs of people with diabetes. This is the statement from the Consumer Association in Curaçao, emphasizing the importance of accessibility to healthier food options and the need to make the prices of such products affordable for everyone.

Research from 2017 indicates that more than 10,000 people, or eight percent of the adult population of Curaçao, suffer from this condition.

Health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and asthma are common among the Curaçao population. The Consumer Association points out that people with a condition like diabetes should not be excluded when offering products or services.

Additionally, it is crucial that consumers can choose from a wide range of healthy products at reasonable prices, with the ultimate choice lying with the consumer themselves.

Choices

Restaurants and stores are specifically urged to improve food offerings and services for people with diabetes. This can be done, for example, by creating special menus and offering a variety of special products that help people with diabetes make better choices and manage their health.

The call is a response to the observation that the offerings often focus more on taste than health, making it more difficult for diabetes patients to find suitable nutrition.
