WILLEMSTAD - The consultations that have taken place between the government, fishermen and defense have led to new agreements. For some time fishermen have not felt safe on the defense range, which is why they sounded the alarm to the government a few years ago. The first consultation between all parties took place on 1 March 2022, which has now been followed up.
One of the agreements was for the government to visit the Wacawa area so that they could experience what has been done to make it safer. In addition, the government, fishermen and defense could ask each other questions to look for a sustainable solution.
The visit included Prime Minister Pisas, the Minister of Health, Environment and Nature Pietersz-Janga, Minister of Justice Shalten Hato, Minister of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning Charles Cooper, and experts from these ministries. Carmabi, an organization that focuses on the biodiversity of Curaçao, was also present.
Defense Commander Frank Boots was present, along with staff members and a team participating in the gunnery exercises on Wacawa. Representatives of the fishermen were also present. Everyone experienced the visit as positive. There was therefore satisfaction at the end of the day.
