Local | By Correspondent April 16, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - A three-day conference kicked off yesterday at the Central Bank in Curaçao, aimed at developing key insights and plans for the future approach to mental healthcare in detention on the islands. The conference, bringing together participants such as ministers of Justice and Social Affairs from the region, focuses on improving care for prisoners under TBS (terbeschikkingstelling) or PIJ (placement in a juvenile justice institution) measures.

During the meetings, the complexity of mental health issues among prisoners is discussed, and the importance of an integrated approach is emphasized. Participants are exploring the need for high-quality care that must meet international standards, including medical and therapeutic interventions, as well as reintegration programs.

Collaboration between various government agencies, healthcare providers, and legal organizations is seen as crucial for the success of this approach. Efforts are being made to improve evaluation, treatment, and transition processes for continuous and effective care delivery.

The outcomes of this conference will provide guidance on how mental healthcare in detention systems on the islands should be addressed and improved.
