Concerns Grow Over Curaçao’s Ability to Access EU Funds

| By Correspondent March 19, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Despite the European Union’s increased financial commitment to Caribbean territories, concerns are emerging about whether Curaçao and other islands will be able to fully access and utilize the available funds.

One of the main challenges identified is limited implementation capacity. Smaller territories often struggle to meet the administrative and technical requirements tied to European subsidies, raising the risk that part of the funding could go unused.

To address this, the Netherlands has introduced additional support mechanisms, including the appointment of a special envoy to assist Caribbean territories in navigating EU funding structures.

Experts warn that without sufficient preparation and institutional capacity, Curaçao could miss out on a significant share of the available resources.
