WILLEMSTAD — Growing concerns have emerged within the Parliament of Curaçao over alleged institutional discrimination at Kranshi, the civil registry office, particularly affecting individuals of Dominican descent who encounter difficulties in obtaining official documents.
Member of Parliament Ana-Maria Pauletta (PAR) raised the issue following a lecture by anthropologist Sabrina Dinmohamed, who conducted research on Dominican migrants living on the island.
According to Pauletta, Dominican citizens — including children born in Curaçao to Dominican parents — are often wrongfully treated as foreigners. In some cases, this misclassification leads to individuals losing access to their passports and, subsequently, their nationality. Pauletta described the situation as socially unacceptable and called for recognition and an end to these discriminatory practices.
"It is a fact that at this moment, the Dominican community specifically faces institutional discrimination at Kranshi," Pauletta stated in her declaration.
She urged the government to take immediate action to address the issue and to ensure that all citizens receive equal treatment under the law.
