Compulsory education is not observed

Local | By Correspondent February 1, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Compulsory education is still not observed in Curaçao. This is based on reports from the Court of Audit.

In 2016, the Court of Audit identified 26 shortcomings in the enforcement of compulsory education, only two of which have been resolved. Education minister Sithree van Heydoorn is said to have indicated that he is working on the problem. The Court sees no improvement and recommends that Parliament hold the minister accountable.

The shortcomings include the lack of education officers and knowledge of compulsory education legislation. There is also no automated student administration system yet.
