Community discontent over refusal of 100-guilder bills

Local | By Correspondent July 16, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Parliamentarian Michelangelo Martines of the opposition party KEM is concerned about the growing dissatisfaction in the community due to various businesses, such as gas stations and supermarkets, refusing to accept 100-guilder bills. KEM has sent a letter with questions to Minister of Finance Javier Silvania.

According to Martines, the businesses justify their decision by pointing to the large number of counterfeit 100-guilder bills in circulation, for which their detection equipment is unsuitable. As a result, all bills of this denomination are being refused, causing frustration among citizens who use these bills.

The KEM faction calls the situation unacceptable and unjust for the community and has urgently questioned Silvania. They want to know if the minister is aware of these practices and whether they comply with existing monetary laws.

Additionally, the party seeks clarification on the extent of the counterfeit bill problem and what measures are being taken to address it.
