Collaboration Between Government, Residents, and J&M Moderno Egg Farm Brings Solution to Waste Disposal Issue

Local | By Correspondent March 7, 2025

WILLEMSTAD J&M Moderno Egg Farm remains operational, thanks to a collaborative effort involving the government, residents of Sunset Heights and Sun Valley, and the egg farm itself. A long-term solution has been identified, focusing on investing in a facility that processes chicken manure into sustainable energy, aligning with the principles of the circular economy.

This emerging solution is highlighted in a short documentary titled "Egg Farm," produced by the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN). The documentary features various individuals and experts, showcasing the efforts made to address the ongoing issues. The documentary reveals that a temporary solution has been reached for the farm’s waste disposal problem.

The short-term solution, which involves dumping the chicken manure at Sint Joris (Dam Pretu), merely shifted the odor problem to neighboring communities. Residents immediately voiced their concerns to the government. Following repeated complaints from residents of Sunset Heights and Sun Valley regarding the foul odor and mosquito infestations, as well as a court ruling against Moderno, GMN Minister Javier Silvania (MFK) took action. He decided to initiate discussions with all concerned parties, bringing together experts from GMN, the Ministry of Traffic, Transport, and Spatial Planning (VVRP), and the Domain Management Service.

A working group was formed, comprising members from the different stakeholders. This committee focused on finding a short-term solution, while also exploring potential long-term remedies for the situation.
