Coast Guard rescues hiker in distress at Christoffelberg

Local | By Press release August 19, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - On Sunday afternoon, August 18, the Coast Guard's Maritime Operations Center responded to an urgent call regarding a 60-year-old local man who became unwell while hiking in the Christoffelberg area. The man, overcome by the intense heat, found himself in severe distress and required immediate assistance.

Two park rangers from Christoffel Park were the first to reach the scene. They provided initial aid and quickly called for additional support. The fire department also responded, but the man's condition made it impossible to transport him via road.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Coast Guard deployed a helicopter to evacuate the hiker. The man was safely airlifted from Christoffelberg to HATO, where medical personnel were on standby to transfer him to the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) for further treatment.

The rapid response by the park rangers, fire department, and Coast Guard ensured that the man received the urgent care he needed. His current condition remains under observation.
