Coast Guard Intercepts Boat Carrying 10 People and a Monkey

WILLEMSTAD – Outgoing Minister of Justice Shalten Hato has expressed concern about the ongoing issue of illegal immigration in Curaçao. According to the minister, there remains a perception in the community that entering and staying on the island illegally is easy—but recent developments prove otherwise.

In the early hours of May 21, 2025, vigilant personnel from the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard successfully intercepted an illegal boat carrying 10 undocumented migrants and a monkey. The operation was launched after the Coast Guard’s radar system detected the vessel, prompting a swift response at sea to stop and board it.

Following the interception, the individuals were handed over to the Immigration Department of the Curaçao Police Force, where deportation procedures will proceed in accordance with existing laws and regulations. The deportations will be carried out at the individuals' own expense, as is standard in such cases.

Minister Hato noted that this incident demonstrates the effectiveness of recent investments in advanced equipment and technology, as well as in operational capacity and staff training. “To protect our borders and ensure public safety, we must continue to invest in both sophisticated systems and human resources,” he emphasized.

The Minister also expressed deep gratitude to the Coast Guard and the Curaçao Police Force for their dedication and swift, effective action during the operation. “Each successful operation is a step forward toward a safer and more orderly Curaçao,” said Minister Hato.
