Coast Guard helicopter evacuates injured Frenchman from catamaran

Local | By Correspondent September 2, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - A Coast Guard helicopter successfully evacuated a French man who sustained injuries on a catamaran late Friday night. The vessel had run aground on rocks near Hambrak on the eastern side of Curaçao.

The incident was reported Friday evening, prompting the CITRO boat to sail to the stranded catamaran. While the crew of the volunteer organization was able to board the catamaran, they were unable to return to the CITRO boat due to strong currents. Consequently, a decision was made to deploy the helicopter for the rescue operation. The evacuation was carried out successfully, with the injured Frenchman being transported to Hato, where ambulance personnel met him and transferred him to the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) for further medical care.

The Coast Guard announced the details of the operation over the weekend. Onboard the catamaran were a French man and woman. The man had already sustained injuries prior to the catamaran running aground.
