WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) has completed a major upgrade of its IT infrastructure to support its growing digital operations. The 300-bed facility, known for its advanced clinical care and accessibility, faced the challenge of replacing aging hardware and a VMware-based environment after several years of operation.
According to Elmer Kwidama, CMC’s IT Manager, the hospital needed a solution that was powerful, reliable, scalable and easy to manage — all while staying within budget. “Our hardware and VMware platform were due for replacement. We were looking for a robust and dependable solution that could grow with us and was simple to administer. Price was also an important factor,” he explained. With a network of roughly 3,500 devices and an IT team divided into multiple clusters — from functional management to Business Intelligence — CMC required a modern, scalable and cost-conscious platform to keep its medical services running efficiently.
A Centralized IT Environment with Nutanix Cloud Manager
CMC ultimately selected Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure as the foundation of its new IT environment. With Nutanix Cloud Manager, the hospital now has a centralized and transparent system for managing all IT operations. Nutanix Unified Storage consolidates storage into an efficient, secure setup, eliminating the complexity of multiple separate storage solutions. This unified approach allows CMC to maintain safe backups and ensure operational continuity.
Nutanix was chosen because it offers a complete package perfectly aligned with the needs of a modern digital healthcare institution — providing high performance, efficient management, scalability and cost savings.
Efficiency Boost Leads to Major Cost Reductions
Thanks to Nutanix’s streamlined integration and lifecycle management tools, the IT team can perform maintenance more quickly and with far less effort. The “single pane of glass” interface simplifies daily operations and frees up staff to focus on innovation rather than routine upkeep. This increased efficiency has also translated into significant financial savings, as reduced IT complexity and consolidated storage help lower operational expenses.
“We now have one interface that brings all systems together, which saves us a lot of time and enables us to respond more quickly to IT needs,” Kwidama said. This improved flexibility ensures resources can be allocated more effectively — an essential factor for a hospital operating under tight budget constraints.
The transition to Nutanix was completed without any network outages. According to Kwidama, the new platform allows CMC to react faster and manage emergencies more effectively. “The system is completely self-healing, and we haven’t experienced any downtime, not even during updates.”
On-Premises Strategy Provides Stability and Control
While CMC is evaluating which applications may be suitable for cloud migration in the future, the hospital will continue to rely on and optimize its on-premises environment for now. Budget control remains a crucial element in maintaining their digital systems without compromising the quality of care.
“Although the cloud is certainly an option for the future, we will continue working with Nutanix on-premises for now because it gives us the stability and control we need,” Kwidama concluded. CMC’s IT upgrade marks a significant step forward in securing reliable, efficient and future-proof digital infrastructure — essential to supporting high-quality healthcare for the people of Curaçao.
