CMC still faces long waiting lists

Local | By Correspondent August 9, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) continues to struggle with long waiting lists. Patients are particularly waiting extended periods for orthopedic and ophthalmology procedures, according to the latest figures released by the hospital.

As of June, there were 451 patients awaiting orthopedic surgery and 293 waiting for eye surgeries. This reflects an increase from May, when the orthopedic department had 434 individuals on the waiting list and ophthalmology had 278.

While there has been a slight decrease compared to the beginning of the year—when 626 people were waiting for orthopedic procedures and 505 for ophthalmology—the waiting lists remain a significant issue. Other departments with long waiting lists include Urology (193 patients), Plastic Surgery (168), Gynecology (117), and General Surgery (86).

In June, CMC performed 526 surgeries, bringing the total for the first half of the year to 3,262.
