CMC files lawsuit over research materials related to 2020 patient death

Local | By Correspondent August 30, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) has filed a lawsuit to obtain research materials connected to the death of a patient in 2020. The materials, which could shed light on the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, were given by her son to the ADC laboratory, but he has refused to hand them over to the hospital.

In response, the CMC is pursuing legal action against both the son and the Inspector General of Public Health, Sirving Keli.

The case has attracted significant attention, particularly after the Health Inspectorate suggested earlier this year that the woman may have died due to an incorrect injection administered at the hospital. This claim caused widespread public concern. However, the CMC contests this conclusion, stating that investigations have shown the patient died of natural causes.

The CMC has also voiced criticism of Minister of Health, Environment, and Nature, Javier Silvania (MFK), accusing him of inappropriately disclosing details of the case on social media. The hospital maintains that sensitive cases such as this should be handled with discretion, rather than being aired in public forums.

As the legal battle unfolds, the CMC is seeking access to the research materials to further clarify the circumstances of the woman’s death and defend its position.
