CMC applies new technique for hernia

Local | By Correspondent January 22, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) has recently been performing Percutaneous Transforaminal Endoscopic Discectomy (PTED), as announced by the CMC. According to the CMC, they are the first hospital in the region to do so.

PTED is a technique where a small incision is made in the back, and an endoscope is inserted, allowing the surgeon to observe a hernia and its surrounding area on a screen. Specialized surgical instruments are then used to remove the hernia. The procedure is known for faster recovery and less postoperative pain.

Such an operation takes about 30 minutes. PTED is said to have a lower risk of scarring due to the small incision and provides room for faster recovery.

The technique was first applied at the CMC on January 16 in collaboration with the Park Medical Center from Rotterdam.
