BRIDGETOWN – Leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have gathered in Bridgetown, Barbados, to seek joint solutions for the challenges facing the region and the world. The 48th CARICOM Summit, taking place from February 19 to 21, focuses on climate change, economic development, and food security.

At the opening session, Barbadian Prime Minister and CARICOM Chair Mia Mottley called for unity and decisive action. “The only way to navigate these difficult times is by being more united and bolder than ever,” she stated. Mottley emphasized that the Caribbean faces the consequences of climate change daily, making immediate action necessary to protect lives, livelihoods, and cultures.

Global Cooperation for Regional Challenges

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing the impact of geopolitical tensions, rising living costs, and climate crises. “International solutions are essential for a better future,” he said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also addressed the summit, stating that small island states deserve a stronger voice in the fight against climate change. “Europe understands how crucial this battle is for the survival of Caribbean nations, and we are ready to listen and collaborate,” she affirmed.

Key Topics and Future Steps

Under the theme “Strength in Unity: Building Caribbean Resilience, Inclusive Growth, and Sustainable Development”, CARICOM leaders are discussing food and nutrition security, the CARICOM Single Market and Economy program, foreign policy, and regional digital resilience.

The summit will conclude with a press conference on February 21, where the decisions made and next steps will be outlined.
