WILLEMSTAD – The Civil Rights Movement Curaçao (CRMC), led by Ringo Harrigan, has expressed outrage over recent comments made by Amado "Broertje" Rojer (PAN) regarding alleged reparations from the Netherlands for its slavery past.
Harrigan clarified that there appears to be a misunderstanding. "The funds allocated by the Netherlands are intended for projects such as a slavery museum and development initiatives on the islands, not for direct compensation to descendants of enslaved individuals," he stated.
The CRMC leader urged the public to scrutinize such claims more critically, emphasizing that misinformation can exacerbate social divisions.
The controversy highlights the sensitivity of discussions around the legacy of slavery and the importance of clear communication about policies and funding related to historical reparations.
