WILLEMSTAD – More than 1,000 people have signed the petition ‘Kas Amintha Sprockel’ in recent weeks, calling on the government to name a new residential project for people with intellectual disabilities after the late Amintha Sprockel.
On behalf of the citizen initiative, a letter was sent yesterday to Minister of Health, Environment, and Nature, Javier Silvania. In it, the signatories express their hope that the new housing complex will honor Sprockel’s legacy, rather than be named after the late Member of Parliament Amerigo Thodé, as previously announced by the minister.
According to Sharo Bikker, who submitted the letter on behalf of the group, the naming carries more than symbolic significance. “It also represents recognition of a lifelong struggle,” she said, referring to Sprockel’s tireless advocacy for individuals with intellectual disabilities through the Totolika Foundation, which she co-founded in 1973 with other parents.
Through the foundation, Sprockel led efforts to improve the living conditions and care facilities for people with special needs on the island. Supporters of the petition believe naming the housing project after her would be a lasting tribute to her pioneering work and unwavering dedication.
