Chobolobo Plaza to become new shopping center, demolition of old buildings underway

Local | By Correspondent April 23, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The long-awaited Chobolobo Plaza project, promising a new, expanded shopping center, is gaining momentum again after the demolition of the last section of the old shopping center on Schottegatweg East. This project by Taubco Management BV, originally announced in July 2017, seemed dormant for years but is now showing signs of progress.

Nearly seven years after the initial announcement via a billboard, the demolition of the former shopping complex, previously home to Samsom among others, has been completed. This marks a new phase in the development of the ambitious Chobolobo Plaza, which extends behind the old complex to Landhuis Chobolobo.

Information about the project's progress remains scarce; Director Irwin Tauber has not recently shared any new details about the planning or progress. Earlier reports suggested that the project would be built in two phases with a planned completion by mid-2019, but this timeline proved unattainable.

Taubco's website currently does not provide an update on the schedule but emphasizes that Chobolobo Plaza aims to be a high-quality shopping center, with architecture inspired by a modern version of the Handelskade. Taubco Management is no stranger to the real estate world; they previously realized Churchill Plaza and Juno Plaza.
