WILLEMSTAD - The Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS) is encouraging residents of Curaçao to deposit loose change or use it for purchases instead of storing it at home or in vehicles. According to the CBCS, coins that remain out of circulation strain the island’s coin supply.
The bank is accepting all types of coins, from cents to guilders, and residents can exchange them for banknotes. “Lower denominations aren’t circulating adequately,” a CBCS spokesperson said. “Many people keep loose change in jars and other containers, which puts pressure on the coin supply.” To help address this, the CBCS is asking residents to either use their coins in everyday transactions or bring them to the bank to exchange for banknotes.
Exchanging coins is free at the CBCS office in Scharloo, and residents with large amounts of coins are encouraged to make an appointment by phone.
