Long-Term Price Developments

Inflation reflects the loss of purchasing power due to the rise in consumer prices for goods and services over a longer period (typically 12 months). The inflation rate serves as an indicator of the average increase in the cost of living and is therefore recommended as an indexation tool for wages, pensions, social benefits, the minimum wage, and other income sources.

Inflation for a specific month is calculated by comparing the 12-month average CPI for that month with the 12-month average CPI from the same month a year earlier. Over the 12-month period ending in January 2025, consumer prices increased by an average of 2.5% compared to the same period a year earlier. The 12-month average CPI rose from 100.3 in January 2024 to 102.8 in January 2025.
