WILLEMSTAD - Of the total population of Curaçao, one in five people is older than 65, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). As of January 1, 2022, there will be nearly 30,000 people on the island over the age of 65.
The CBS concludes that Curaçao is aging. In 2011, 13.6 percent of the population was over 65 years of age. Now that has risen to almost 20 percent of the population.
The CBS numbers also show that fewer babies were born between 1992 and 2022. As a result, the age category of 0-14 years decreases from 26 percent to 17 percent. The only age group that has remained the same over the same period is the category aged 15 to 64 years.
Furthermore, according to CBS, women on the island are on average almost six years older than men. The life expectancy of a woman is 81.6 years and for a man 75.8. There are also more older women than men on the island. Of the total of 43 residents over a hundred, 36 are women and seven are men.
