CARICOM prepares humanitarian aid package for Cuba amid deepening crisis

Local, World news, | By Correspondent March 25, 2026

GEORGETOWN – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries are preparing a coordinated humanitarian aid package for Cuba as the island continues to face a severe economic and energy crisis.

The initiative, agreed upon during the recent CARICOM Heads of Government meeting, will provide essential supplies including food, medical materials, and basic infrastructure support. The effort is being coordinated by the CARICOM Secretariat based in Georgetown, Guyana.

According to regional officials, the aid package will include items such as powdered milk, rice, flour, canned goods, and baby formula, along with medical supplies and equipment. The shipment will also feature solar panels, batteries, and water tanks to help address ongoing power shortages and infrastructure challenges in Cuba.

Each CARICOM member state has committed to making a financial contribution toward the initiative. The funds will be used to purchase supplies in Mexico, which is supporting the effort by identifying suppliers and covering shipping costs to Cuba.

The humanitarian effort comes as Cuba continues to struggle with prolonged blackouts, fuel shortages, and economic hardship. Regional leaders have emphasized that the crisis has broader implications for the Caribbean, including potential impacts on migration, security, and economic stability.

CARICOM leaders say the initiative reflects regional solidarity and a commitment to supporting the Cuban population during a period of significant hardship.
