WILLEMSTAD – On May 5, Caribbean parents who were victims of the Dutch childcare benefits scandal will host a special event on Curaçao: the Minority's Freedom Dinner. The gathering will take place at the Brionschool in Otrobanda from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
This dinner is a tribute to freedom, diversity, and unity, and is part of the broader celebration of National Liberation Dinners, held annually on Liberation Day throughout the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Caribbean islands also observe this day. During the Minority’s Freedom Dinner, "Vrijheidssoep" (Freedom Soup), the culinary symbol of the day, will be served. More importantly, attendees will share stories of freedom, loss, and recovery.
The event is being organized by parents who were wrongly labeled as fraudsters by the Dutch Tax Authority, a label they have carried for years, with ongoing consequences. With this dinner, they aim to share their story with the local community and spark a conversation about what freedom means in the wake of systemic injustice.
The dinner’s location – near the mural of freedom fighter Pedro Luis Brion – was chosen deliberately as a symbol of resistance and solidarity. Everyone is invited to participate.
