Caribbean Coast Guard Plays Key Role but Operates Under Local Authority

| By Correspondent March 23, 2026

THE HAGUE – The Caribbean Coast Guard continues to play a central role in maritime security around Curaçao, but operates primarily under local authority despite its Kingdom-wide structure.

According to the Dutch government, the Coast Guard is a joint organization involving Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten, and the Netherlands. While it falls under the broader Kingdom framework, its operational activities are carried out under the authority of local governments.

The Coast Guard is responsible for monitoring shipping activity, enforcing maritime laws, and addressing illegal activities at sea.

However, enforcement of international maritime regulations remains the responsibility of individual countries within the Kingdom, highlighting the complex division of powers.
