Care Worker Sentenced to 4 Years for Raping Psychiatric Patient in Curaçao Hospital

Local | By Correspondent April 1, 2025

WILLEMSTAD A 38-year-old man has been sentenced to four years in prison, with six months suspended, for sexually assaulting a female patient at the Psychiatric Acute Admission Unit (PAAZ) of Curaçao Medical Center (CMC). The rape occurred in July 2023 while the defendant worked as an orderly and the victim was hospitalized.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the man entered the victim’s room while she slept, raped her, and left semen on her clothing. DNA analysis by the Netherlands Forensic Institute confirmed a match to the suspect. The victim initially did not report the assault out of shame and fear but later disclosed it during therapy sessions.

The defendant denied the allegations and gave inconsistent statements about his contact with the victim. The court ruled that he exploited his position, severely breaching trust in healthcare. The victim’s vulnerable condition aggravated the offense.

The man was also convicted of a second incident involving sexually inappropriate behavior toward another woman near Sorsaka. The judge noted his lack of accountability and banned him from working in healthcare for five years.
