Capriles Clinic Closes 24-Hour Unit Without Prior Notice; Minister Silvania Expresses Disagreement

WILLEMSTAD – The Capriles Clinic has officially informed Minister of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN), Javier Silvania (MFK), about the closure of the 24-hour residential unit of Un Miho Majan (UMM). The closure, which took effect on July 1, was not communicated in advance to the minister. According to board chairman Henk Kamsteeg, the impact was considered “very limited,” and thus no prior notification was given.

Minister Silvania, however, disagreed with the clinic’s decision to shut down the residential department without consultation.

Clients Relocated, Day Program Continues

Of the eight clients affected by the closure, six were internally relocated within the Capriles Clinic, one moved to Mi Refugio, and one client voluntarily returned home. The UMM day program remains operational and is now hosted at the Herstelacademie. According to the mental health organization GGz, all clients continue to receive adequate support and care.

The clinic acknowledges that some individuals require a more protective living environment, which UMM was no longer able to provide. Efforts are currently underway to arrange alternative housing solutions, including collaboration with Fundashon Nos Kas.

Plans to Revive Overnight Shelter for Addicts

GGz is also exploring the possibility of reviving the Dios Yudami overnight shelter for chronic addicts, which had previously closed. This, however, depends on available financial resources.

On the financial front, Capriles reports progress due to recognized care tariffs and increased reimbursements. Nonetheless, the clinic warns that any further expansion of services will only be possible if long-term structural funding is secured.

Call for Greater Integration in Mental Health Sector

The Capriles Clinic emphasized the need for stronger collaboration within the mental health care sector and advocates for greater integration among GGz institutions to improve both quality and efficiency of care.

The clinic’s board has expressed its willingness to meet with Minister Silvania in person to discuss future cooperation and reforms within the mental health sector.
