Calmes wants to know how the government is preparing to prevent misuse of Artificial Intelligence

Local | By Correspondent July 5, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The Trabou pa Kòrsou faction (TPK) addressed the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a letter to the government. Rennox Calmes directed his letter to Minister of Governance, Planning, and Public Service (BPD) Orlando "Kid" Martina of the PNP faction, in which he asks what the government is doing to prevent misuse of AI.

TPK has taken note that around the world, there are discussions about the pros and cons of AI and efforts to find the best way to implement it in practice while adhering to the law. "Trabou pa Kòrsou wants to know how well-prepared Curaçao is regarding this topic and what measures the Curaçao government is taking to prevent misuse. For example, on April 21, 2021, the European Commission presented a draft law concept to the European Union. Mr. Mauritz Kop, a member of the Dutch AI coalition, a member of the European AI Alliance, and a member of the Transatlantic Technology Law Forum, made strategic recommendations to the European Commission based on four points."

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) law is based on these 4 points. Ensure that commercial AI systems used within the European Union (EU) are safe and comply with existing legislation on EU rights and fundamental values. Guarantee legal security to facilitate investments and innovation in AI. Improve the management and effective control of existing fundamental rights and security standards of AI systems. And facilitate the development of a single market for legally compliant, safe, and reliable AI applications to prevent market fragmentation.

In relation to this topic, Calmes asked 3 questions. He wants Minister Martina to provide information on how the government is addressing AI in terms of legislation, commission, and management. He also wants the Minister to inform whether the government has conducted an investigation and what is the best way for the government to address AI. Lastly, he asked how government agencies, such as Kranshi, Human Resources, Permit Department, etc., are preparing to address AI.
