Call for Sustainable Solutions for Klein Curaçao: Balancing Tourism, Business, and Conservation

Local | By Correspondent January 15, 2025

WILLEMSTADConcerned citizen Liane Janga Constancia has called on the Curaçao government and parliament to find a sustainable and equitable solution for the ongoing issues surrounding Klein Curaçao. Her appeal highlights the need to balance tourism, business interests, and environmental conservation on the island.

The plea follows growing tensions over illegal constructions and perceived unequal treatment of businesses operating on Klein Curaçao.

According to Constancia, entrepreneurs have long utilized Klein Curaçao as a tourist destination, creating jobs and generating revenue for Curaçao. However, the operations have sparked debates over their environmental impact, particularly on sea turtles and other wildlife, as well as the legality of some structures. Reports of some businesses being forced to cease operations while others are allowed to continue have raised concerns about fairness and transparency.

Minister of Traffic, Transportation, and Spatial Planning Charles Cooper (MFK) has stated that the government is considering stricter enforcement measures. Additionally, the establishment of the Klein Curaçao Conservation Foundation in 2023 has brought attention to preservation efforts but also heightened tensions between business operators and conservationists.

Constancia urges the government to implement clear regulations and ensure fair treatment of all businesses on the island. She emphasizes the importance of a long-term solution that harmonizes tourism, environmental protection, and the well-being of the Curaçaoan community.

Efforts to address the situation are seen as critical for maintaining Klein Curaçao as both a vital economic asset and a cherished natural heritage site.
