WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Business Association (VBC) is calling on companies across the island to close early on Thursday afternoon so employees can watch Curaçao’s final group-stage match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The organization is advising employers to close their doors no later than 3:00 p.m., one hour before kickoff. The match, which begins at 4:00 p.m. Curaçao time, marks the national team’s final group-stage appearance in what has already become a historic World Cup campaign for the island.
According to the VBC, businesses in sectors including finance, retail, construction, hospitality, and professional services are encouraged to give employees the opportunity to follow the match together. Employers are also being urged to organize viewing events in the workplace where possible.
The association described Curaçao’s participation in the World Cup as a landmark moment in the country’s history, emphasizing that the tournament represents more than just football. The VBC said the event has become a symbol of national pride, unity, and international recognition for Curaçao.
While acknowledging that early closures may require flexibility from employers, the organization believes the shared experience of supporting the national team can strengthen employee engagement and boost workplace morale.
For businesses that must remain open, particularly those in the hospitality, catering, and entertainment sectors, the VBC is encouraging owners to incorporate the match into their operations. Suggested measures include setting up viewing screens and creating opportunities for both staff and customers to watch the game together.
As anticipation builds across the island, the business community is joining government agencies and other organizations in rallying behind Curaçao’s national team as it prepares for a crucial World Cup showdown.
