Buro Ziektekostenvoorziening demands over 1 million in overdue rent from government

Local | By Correspondent June 17, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Stichting Buro Ziektekostenvoorzieningen (SBZV) has sent a letter to the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature demanding payment of over one million guilders in overdue rent.

According to the letter addressed to the Secretary-General of the Ministry, the liquidators of SBZV indicated that in a letter dated August 11, 2018, both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance were informed about the rent arrears of the BZV building in Brievengat, which have been accumulating since February 2018, considering Curaçao’s precarious financial situation.

The liquidators never agreed to the unilateral decision to stop payment. Since July 1, 2014, the Youth Health Care department (JGZ) has been renting the building from SBZV on Kaya Charles Maduro for a monthly sum of 14,000 guilders.

The liquidators have considered Curaçao’s financial situation and have given the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature ample time to resolve the issue. On March 11, 2022, a letter was sent to the Ministry, in which the then-minister, with mediation from the Director of G&Gz, reported that there was an outstanding amount of 728,000 guilders as of March. To date, the liquidators have not received any response to this letter.

The debt has since grown to 1,106,000 guilders as of June 2024. One of the tasks of the liquidators is to collect all outstanding amounts. Given that this involves a government ministry, they aim to handle this matter in the most appropriate way.

The liquidators urgently appeal to the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature to come to a payment arrangement to settle the outstanding debt. They hope to receive a proposal within 14 days.
