Budget 2025 debate postponed due to ministerial and parliamentary absences

Local | By Correspondent November 22, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The public debate on Curaçao's 2025 budget, originally scheduled for November 25, has been postponed, according to Extra. Parliament Speaker Charetti America-Francisca (MFK) is considering splitting the proceedings into two phases, with discussions now set to begin between December 9 and 13.

Reasons for the Delay

The postponement is attributed to the absence of key ministers and members of Parliament. Prime Minister Gilmar ‘Pik’ Pisas (MFK) is scheduled to travel to Suriname next week to participate in celebrations marking the country’s 49th Independence Day.

Additionally, a parliamentary delegation will leave on November 30 for the 60th-anniversary meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino) in Panama.

Parlatino Leadership Bid

During the Parlatino gathering, Parliamentarian Gwendell Mercelina (PNP) will run for the presidency of the organization. Mercelina noted his recognition for advocacy on issues such as environmental sustainability and the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The delay in the budget debate underscores the competing demands on the government and Parliament during a period of significant regional and international engagement. The revised timeline aims to ensure all stakeholders are present for this critical discussion.
