Bonaire opens maritime border with Venezuela

Local | By Correspondent February 24, 2023

KRALENDIJK - From April 3, the maritime borders between Bonaire and Venezuela will open again. This was announced by the government of Bonaire. The opening is the result of technical consultations that took place in Curaçao at the end of January.

The opening in April will initially mean a resumption of imports of fruit, vegetables and building materials. By doing so, the island’s Executive Council hopes to further reduce the cost of living. Other maritime and air traffic will also resume later.

On February 19, 2019, Venezuela unilaterally closed the border with the ABC Islands and again airspace until April 30, 2023. When Venezuela wanted to reopen the borders, the ABC Islands refused to do so, due to smuggling and illegal migration flows from the country.
