Bonaire Establishes Bureau for Administrative and International Affairs, Plans Representation in The Hague

Local, | By Correspondent February 10, 2026

KRALENDIJK – Bonaire is set to establish a new Bureau for Administrative and International Affairs (BIB), aimed at strengthening the island’s strategic coordination and representation at both national and international levels.

The initiative is outlined in a start memorandum submitted by the Executive Council to the Island Council. According to the document, the new unit will be responsible for coordinating administrative and international dossiers, maintaining relations with national and international partners, and enhancing Bonaire’s advocacy efforts.

Among the listed responsibilities is the follow-up on a request to have Bonaire added to the United Nations list of non-self-governing territories. The memorandum does not provide further details on this objective, but the inclusion signals a politically sensitive dimension to the new bureau’s mandate.

The plan also includes the establishment of a physical representation in The Hague. The office was originally expected to open last year, but the launch was delayed for reasons that have not been publicly clarified.

The Executive Council intends to allocate $1 million this year for the establishment of the BIB. The investment underscores Bonaire’s ambition to professionalize its external relations and strengthen its position within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and beyond.

The creation of the bureau comes amid ongoing discussions about governance structures and Bonaire’s role as a public entity within the Kingdom. By institutionalizing its administrative and international coordination, Bonaire appears to be seeking a more structured and proactive approach to defending its interests at both the national and international levels.

Further debate in the Island Council is expected as the proposal moves forward.
