Bishop Luis Secco Retires After Over Two Decades of Service

Local | By Correspondent January 9, 2025

WILLEMSTAD After more than two decades of dedicated service, Bishop Luis Secco (77) is stepping down from his role at the Diocese of Willemstad to retire. "His departure marks the end of an era of immense dedication to the faith communities of Curaçao, Bonaire, Aruba, Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustatius," stated the Diocese of Willemstad (BW).

Bishop Secco was appointed to the Diocese of Willemstad in 2001. Throughout his tenure, he worked tirelessly to develop the church and pastoral care in the region. According to the diocese, his leadership was a "blessed period" that greatly impacted local communities. Upon his retirement, Secco will assume the title of emeritus bishop, retaining only his episcopal title.

Transitional Leadership

During the transition period, the Holy See (the Vatican) has appointed Archbishop Jason Gordon of Trinidad and Tobago as the apostolic administrator. Archbishop Gordon will temporarily oversee the diocese's responsibilities until a new bishop is appointed. "Gordon is known for his zeal in strengthening faith communities and is no stranger to the Caribbean region," BW noted.

The official appointment of a new bishop will be announced at a later date. Meanwhile, the diocese urges the community to remain united in faith during this interim period.

Farewell Mass

A farewell mass for Bishop Secco is scheduled to take place on Sunday, January 19, at 11:00 AM in the Santa Famia Church in Willemstad. The diocese invites the faithful to join in celebrating Secco's legacy and expressing gratitude for his years of service.
