Bird Association "De Vogelvriend" Celebrates 70th Anniversary with Months of Festivities

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao-based bird association “De Vogelvriend” is celebrating a remarkable milestone this year: its 70th anniversary. The festivities begin on Saturday, May 25, with a special mass in Suffisant, and the organization warmly invites the public—especially bird enthusiasts—to attend.

The anniversary celebrations will span several months, featuring a wide variety of activities that reflect the organization’s deep connection with nature and the local community.

Barbecue and Bird Fair in June

On Saturday, June 1, the association will host a barbecue at Rancho De Herberg, offering an opportunity for visitors to enjoy a social day with food, drinks, and interaction with members of De Vogelvriend.

This will be followed by a large bird fair on Sunday, June 15, just before Father’s Day, at the same location. From 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, visitors will be able to purchase birds, as well as plants and accessories for bird care and breeding.

Nature Walk and Bird Release on July 2

A special moment in the anniversary program is planned for Tuesday, July 2, Curaçao’s Day of the Anthem and Flag. On that day, De Vogelvriend will organize a nature walk through the scenic area around Willibrordus and the salt pans of Banda Bou, starting at 6:00 AM.

During the walk, members of the association will release specially bred birds back into the wild. The event aims to raise awareness about the protection of Curaçao’s native bird species, which are becoming increasingly rare due to declining populations.

Grand Bird Show in October

The highlight of the jubilee year will take place on October 3, 4, and 5 with a major bird show at Sambil Shopping Center. Visitors will be able to admire a wide array of birds, including local species, exotic parrots, budgerigars, and colorful mutations. A competition among members will be held, and visitors will also have the opportunity to purchase birds at the event.

With its anniversary celebration, De Vogelvriend not only honors seven decades of dedication to bird lovers in Curaçao but also promotes education, conservation, and the joy of aviculture within the broader community.
