Betrian: “Delay in Calmes investigation undermines trust in Public Prosecutor’s office”

WILLEMSTAD - Former interim Prime Minister Stanley Betrian has voiced strong criticism over the prolonged period between the filing of charges against Member of Parliament Rennox Calmes (TPK) in April 2023 and his arrest last month. Betrian contends that despite the Public Prosecutor’s Office (OM) facing limited resources and manpower, it should have acted more swiftly to uphold principles of good governance.

Betrian asserts that the government, particularly through the Minister of Justice, should have promptly intervened to ensure the OM had adequate resources. He warns that such delays erode public trust in the integrity of the justice system and calls for a strategic plan to enhance the OM's capacity.

Calmes was apprehended on suspicion of falsifying salary information during the hiring of faction staff. He was released after two days but remains a suspect and is barred from contacting those involved in the case. Despite this, he has resumed his parliamentary duties.

Highlighting the critical need for prompt action in criminal justice, Betrian stresses that delays can significantly damage the community's confidence in the legal system. He urges the OM to act responsibly and maintain the rule of law, ensuring the public's continued trust in the integrity of the justice system.
