WILLEMSTAD – Several government organizations recently conducted a simulation exercise in Nieuwestraat to evaluate access for emergency vehicles and identify potential challenges in the area.
The exercise involved the Curaçao Fire Department, Curaçao Police Force (KPC), Ministry of Economic Development (MEO), Department of Spatial Planning (ROP), Public Works Department (OW), and Domain Management.
The objective was to assess whether emergency services can safely and efficiently access the area when needed, while protecting the safety of businesses, residents and visitors. The exercise also collected practical information that could be used for possible improvements to public spaces.

During the simulation, authorities observed and documented different situations that could affect emergency response. Each organization identified points of attention based on its own responsibilities. These findings will be discussed during upcoming meetings, after which recommendations and possible measures will be developed to improve accessibility and safety in the area.
One of the measures being evaluated is the possibility of closing Nieuwestraat to motorized traffic between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. The proposal forms part of a broader analysis aimed at creating a safer environment for pedestrians while maintaining access for emergency services.
The evaluation follows significant growth in commercial and tourism activity in Pietermaai. The area has seen a substantial increase in visitors, particularly during evening hours. During busy periods, the combination of pedestrians and vehicle traffic can create potentially dangerous situations.

The assessment also responds to a request from Stichting Pietermaai to explore measures that could contribute to a safer and more accessible area.
After all participating organizations have reviewed and analyzed their findings, a joint recommendation will be prepared. This recommendation will serve as the basis for a balanced decision that considers the interests of residents, business owners, visitors and emergency services.
