WILLEMSTAD – The Multidisciplinary Team, under the direction and coordination of the Curaçao Action Center Against Undermining (Actie Centrum Ondermijning Curaçao), has continued its inspections of local garages. On Tuesday, six businesses were checked, resulting in the closure of one, a formal warning for another, and the discovery of major electricity theft.
At a garage located at Brokopondostraat 26, authorities uncovered two incidents of electricity theft, with evidence pointing to large-scale unauthorized power usage. Aqualectra, the island’s utility company, has imposed a fine of more than 15,000 guilders in response.
The inspections primarily targeted garages and businesses involved in the sale of vehicles and auto parts, with a focus on identifying illegal activities such as theft, lack of business registration, and permit violations.
A garage on Sportlaan 3 was shut down for operating without the required license. Meanwhile, the owner of a garage at Ronde Klip 18 received a formal warning for not being registered with the Chamber of Commerce.
The government continues to stress the importance of compliance and transparency in the automotive sector, which is often vulnerable to fraud, environmental violations, and underground economic activity. Further inspections are expected in the coming weeks.
