WILLEMSTAD – Governor of Curaçao Mauritsz de Kort received author and physician Desiree Hooi-Martina at the Governor’s Palace on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
During the meeting, Hooi-Martina presented the Governor with a copy of her recently published book, YAYA – Eer en erkenning (YAYA – Honor and Recognition).
In the book, Hooi-Martina highlights the stories of the yaya’s — women who played an essential role in Curaçaoan families and communities for generations. The publication explores their significance within the island’s historical context and invites readers to reflect on their lasting influence on Curaçaoan society.

During the conversation, the importance of bringing often-overlooked stories from Curaçao’s history to the forefront was discussed. The meeting also focused on the value of recognizing cultural heritage and the role literature can play in raising awareness, encouraging dialogue and strengthening connections between generations.
Through YAYA – Eer en erkenning, Hooi-Martina seeks to preserve and honor the legacy of women whose contributions have shaped family life and social traditions on Curaçao.
