Asphalt Lake to be cleared within five years

Local | By Correspondent August 9, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The asphalt lake, located in the northeastern part of Schottegat near Emmastad, is set to be cleaned up within the next five years, with plans for sustainable activities to take place on the currently heavily polluted site. This announcement was made by Ramses Martina, director of Buskabaai.

The asphalt lake was created when Shell began dumping leftover asphalt from jet fuel refining during World War II, resulting in over 80 years of pollution in the area.

Martina stated that the goal is to transition the site from contaminated to clean over the coming years. More information about the project will be provided later, as reported by local media. The asphalt lake encompasses a relatively large area, consisting of both wet and dry sections, measuring approximately 28 and 27 hectares, respectively.
